What a social media QR code does
A social QR code takes someone from a printed surface straight to your profile — no searching, no confusing your handle with a lookalike account. Pick the platform, enter your username, and the generator builds the correct profile URL and encodes it. On phones with the app installed, the link opens the app directly; otherwise it opens the web profile. A custom-URL option covers link-in-bio pages and platforms not listed. The code is built in your browser and downloads as PNG or SVG.
Profile URL formats
| Platform | URL the code contains | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| https://instagram.com/username | Opens in the app on most phones | |
| https://facebook.com/username-or-page | Pages and profiles use the same pattern | |
| X (Twitter) | https://x.com/username | twitter.com links still redirect |
| TikTok | https://tiktok.com/@username | Note the @ |
| YouTube | https://youtube.com/@handle | Handles replaced channel IDs in 2022 |
| https://linkedin.com/in/username | Company pages use /company/name | |
| Custom | Any URL | Linktree, Threads, Pinterest, Discord invites, etc. |
Enter the username exactly as it appears in your profile URL, without the @ (except where the platform requires it, which the generator adds for you). Usernames are case-insensitive on most platforms, but copy yours precisely to be safe.
One profile or a link page?
- One profile when the surface has one purpose — a shop's Instagram on a window sticker, a speaker's LinkedIn on a slide.
- A link-in-bio page (Linktree, Beacons, your own site) when you want people to choose — several platforms, a shop, a newsletter — and when you want to change the destinations after printing.
- Several codes side by side is usually a mistake: people scan one. Pick the platform where you most want followers, or use a link page.
Where these codes work best
- Table tents, menus and receipts — “Follow us for the daily special”.
- Product packaging and hang tags — connecting a physical product to unboxing content.
- Event badges and booth banners — trade-show follow-ups.
- Business cards for creators and freelancers.
- Posters and flyers for musicians, venues and community groups.
- Vehicle wraps and A-boards — a large code that scans from a few metres.
- Presentation closing slides — the audience photographs the screen.
Design tips
- Add a caption and the platform's icon next to the code so people know what they will get. A bare code has a lower scan rate.
- Keep the quiet zone: a white margin at least four modules wide, free of logos and borders.
- Brand colours are fine if the contrast stays high — dark modules on a light background. Never invert.
- Size for distance: about 1 cm of code per 10 cm of scan distance. A poster scanned from 1 m needs a 10 cm code.
- Test with the app installed and not installed; the web fallback should show the right profile.
Tracking scans
A direct profile link gives you no scan data — platforms report profile visits, but not their source. If you need numbers, use the custom URL option with a short link (Bitly, your own redirect) that counts clicks, or add UTM parameters to a link-page URL. That also lets you change where the code points later without reprinting.
