What WebP to PNG does
Images saved from websites increasingly arrive as WebP, which older programs, some upload forms and many people's workflows do not accept. This converter turns a WebP into a PNG — lossless, universally supported, and with transparency kept — in your browser, with nothing uploaded. Choose it over WebP to JPG when the image has a transparent background or contains text and graphics that JPEG would blur.

A PNG made from a lossy WebP faithfully preserves the WebP's compression artefacts at a much larger size. That is fine when compatibility or transparency is the goal; if size matters and there is no transparency, WebP to JPG is the better choice.
Where WebP fails to open
- Microsoft Office 2016 and earlier, and some current Office builds on older Windows.
- Older versions of Photoshop (before 23.2), Lightroom Classic, and many lightweight image viewers.
- Digital photo frames, print kiosks and photo-book services.
- Upload forms on government, HR and marketplace sites that whitelist JPG and PNG.
- Some email clients, which show WebP attachments as generic files.
What is preserved
- Transparency — the alpha channel carries over to the PNG intact.
- Dimensions — unchanged.
- Colour — decoded to sRGB.
- Not preserved: animation (only the first frame is converted) and any EXIF or XMP metadata.
Avoiding WebP downloads
Sites serve WebP when the browser says it accepts it, so “Save image as” gives you a .webp even if the page looked like a JPG. Workarounds: copy the image and paste into an editor (which pastes raw pixels), use a browser extension that requests legacy formats, or — simplest — save the WebP and convert it here in a second.
Common uses
- Inserting a downloaded logo with transparency into a slide or document.
- Editing a web graphic in software that cannot open WebP.
- Uploading to a form that lists PNG and JPG only.
- Archiving web images in a format guaranteed to open in decades.
