About the GIF tools

GIF is a 1987 format that refuses to die: 256 colours, no sound, weak compression, and yet still the way reactions, screen recordings and short loops travel through chat, email, forums and READMEs. Because so few programs edit animated GIFs well, the same small jobs come up again and again — make it smaller for an upload limit, crop out the borders, pull a single frame, join two clips, play it backwards. These tools do exactly those jobs.

Each one decodes the GIF frame by frame with gifuct-js, compositing partial frames into complete images so that cropping, reversing and merging work correctly, and then re-encodes the result with gif.js. Frame delays, loop settings and transparency are carried through. All of it runs in your browser; the file is never uploaded.

One honest note: GIF is a poor video format, and where a destination accepts MP4 or WebM you will get better quality at a tenth of the size. The compressor page explains the trade-offs. For the places that still demand a GIF, these tools keep the file as small and as clean as the format allows.
