What AVIF to PNG does
Convert AVIF images to PNG with transparency intact and no further quality loss. AVIF is the compact modern format that websites and some phones now produce; PNG is the universally supported lossless format that every editor, office suite and upload form accepts. The browser decodes the AVIF, and the pixels are written out as PNG exactly — the right choice for logos, icons, UI graphics, screenshots and any image with a transparent background. A photographic AVIF of 300 KB can become a 5 MB PNG. That is expected: PNG stores every pixel. If size matters and there is no transparency, use AVIF to JPG.
What is preserved
- Pixel dimensions and every decoded pixel value (8-bit).
- Alpha transparency, including partial transparency and soft edges.
- Colours, converted to sRGB. HDR and 10/12-bit AVIFs are tone-mapped to 8-bit; wide-gamut colours are clipped to sRGB.
- Not preserved: animation (first frame only), EXIF metadata, embedded ICC profile.
Browser support
AVIF decoding is provided by the browser: Chrome and Edge 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+ (macOS 13, iOS 16.4). If the tool reports that a file cannot be decoded, update the browser or try another one. Conversion of ordinary images takes a fraction of a second; very large images (50 megapixels) may take a few seconds on a phone.
