What GIF to PNG does
Turn a GIF into a PNG — a still image with full colour depth and proper transparency. For a static GIF (a logo, a diagram, a clip-art file from the older web) the PNG is a like-for-like, lossless replacement in a format every modern tool prefers. Static and animated GIFs
- Static GIF: the result is an exact copy of the image's pixels in PNG. The 256-colour limit is inherited — the PNG has no more colours than the GIF had — but it is now in a format that editors, browsers and office tools treat as first-class.
- Animated GIF: the first frame is decoded and saved. To get every frame as a PNG, use GIF to Frames, which exports all of them in a ZIP; to pick a particular moment, that tool is also the way.
- Transparent pixels remain transparent in the PNG.

Tips
- A GIF's hard 1-bit transparency edges stay hard in PNG. To soften them, open the PNG in an editor and feather the edge, or start from the original artwork.
